Island Time
St. George Island and its surrounds offer up a true taste of the Tidewater. Take scenic Lighthouse Road to the Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum & Historic Park. The light is the oldest on the Potomac. The museum explores area history and boat-building traditions. Reach St. George Island via a bridge from the mainland. Here you will find a world that blends a traditional fishing community of crabbers and oystermen with contemporary vacation homes. On foot, bicycling, or kayaking are all great ways to explore the island’s charming landscape of loblolly pine and tall grass.
Back on the mainland and off the beaten path, discover Dradyen African American Schoolhouse. This modest structure is a finely preserved example of a one-room schoolhouse during the Era of Segregation.
