Experience the cutting edge of the U.S. Naval Aviation, get up close to the planes that safeguard the nation, and test your skills in the cockpit of an actual jet-fighter simulator at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum & Visitor Center. Journey back to the Age of Sail and on to Maryland's prehistoric seas and the time of the monstrous Megaladon shark at the Calvert Marine Museum. Top off the day at a waterside restaurant and enjoy the best of Maryland seafood.
You can start this great itinerary in St. Mary’s or Calvert County, depending on your entry point into the region.
Option One: Begin in St. Mary’s County
Day One
First Stop: Lunch. Try a seafood spot, local fare in Leonardtown, or a variety of franchises along Route 235. See dining options.
Second Stop: Museum. Patuxent River Naval Air Museum & Visitors Center (Time at Museum: 2-3 hours). Featuring a brand-new facility, this museum tells the story of the past, present and future of U.S. Navy testing and evaluation at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station via interactive displays, full-sized Mach combat simulators, an outdoor flight line with over 20 full-sized aircraft & much more. Pax River is where early astronauts got their start as test pilots and where the demanding challenges of aircraft system testing continues. Group rates available (Must call Amy at 301-863-1900 to make reservation. Museum normally opens at 10AM, but if you call ahead they will open the museum early for your group. Think about adding a cocktail after-hours with evening program for your group in the new facility!)
Third Stop: Hotel. Check into your hotel and freshen up before dinner. Stay at one of our finest group-friendly hotels and enjoy the special touches that make you know you are welcome! Group rates available. See hotel options.
Fourth Stop: Dinner. Try a local seafood spot, unique dining in historic Leonardtown, or relax at one of a variety of chain restaurants along Route 235. See dining options.
Overnight: Hotel. Enjoy a great complimentary breakfast the next morning before starting off the day!
Day Two
First Stop: Museum. Calvert Marine Museum (Time at Museum: 2-4 hours, depends if you include a cruise). The Calvert Marine Museum, located on beautiful Solomon's Island, brings to life the rich maritime history, ecology, and culture of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay Region. This museum features extensive indoor and outdoor displays, including marine wildlife, fossils, boats, and lighthouses. Add a cruise around the Island on an actual Chesapeake Bay working boat. Group rates available. (Must call to make reservation)
Second Stop: Lunch. Enjoy lunch at any of Solomon Island’s great restaurants.
