Spring at Last!

The fishing is already good and will break wide open on the warmth.

We have endured March weather for April so far, making fishing conditions difficult. However, if the forecasts can be trusted, good weather starts this week: temperatures in the 60's and 70's building to a glorious 80 degrees on Saturday. The fishing is already good and will break wide open on the warmth.

Dennis braved the rain and cold last week for the shad. Fish were very cooperative.

Catfishing is excellent in the upper Potomac and Patuxent.

Miss Susie Charters out of Fort Washington is loading up on huge catfish everyday.

Big fish can be expected from the Benedict Bridge in the Patuxent north to Croom and Jug Bay.

The Potomac is loaded with delicious blue catfish.

James Prinsion landed this 25.15 pound blue catfish at Kings Landing State Park in the upper Patuxent on cut alewife.

The Potomac has catfish from Breton Bay to downtown Washington. Catfish can be caught from Abel's Wharf in Leonardtown, and Bushwood Wharf in the Wicomico.

Crappie are hungry too.

Bass and crappie are active in St. Mary's Lake. The crappie love live minnows. The hungry male crappie are up in the brush piles along the bank.

Shad are biting at Mason Springs. A bucket of crappie from St. Mary's Lake this week. The males are up in the brush piles along the shoreline. Females out deeper. The spawn is on!!

Bass are hungry in the ponds and at St. Mary's Lake.

White perch should make an appearance in the creeks this week. They will hit bloodworm baits and live minnows fished on the bottom. Beetle Spin and Perch Hounder lures will draw some strikes.

Hickory shad are still running in the Mattawoman , just a few yards from the bridge over the upper Creek.

We are a month away from the opening of the Striped bass (rockfish) season (May 16). There will be plenty for trollers and lure casters.
